What to look for in cables

Start with the connection you need. A USB-C cable suits phones, tablets and laptops, an HDMI cable links screens and players, and a network cable carries internet or LAN. Fiber optic cable is the choice for long or demanding links. Measure the distance before buying: a short cable keeps a desk tidy, while a longer one reaches across a room, and cable sold by the meter fits custom installations.

Then check the features. For video, make sure the cable supports high-resolution formats and, if needed, also carries a network connection. For charging and data, look for fast charging support and fast USB data transfer. Shielding helps against interference, gold-plated connectors resist corrosion, and a braided sheath holds up to daily bending.
