What to look for in fishing

Start with the fish and the water. For pike, perch or walleye, most anglers use lures such as plugs, spinners or soft plastic baits, often on a jig head with a stinger hook for surer hooksets. Carp and other coarse fish call for feeder or method rigs, while saltwater needs tackle that resists corrosion. Tungsten is denser than lead, so weights stay small.

Next, decide how a lure should run. Floating and shallow-diving models work near the surface, sinking ones reach deeper fish, and a rattle adds sound in murky water. Nylon monofilament line is a simple, forgiving choice. If you travel, a telescopic rod and a rod case or bag make carrying easier.
