What to look for in vacuums

Start with how you clean. A cordless stick vacuum is quick to grab and easy to carry upstairs. Many also convert into a handheld for stairs, sofas and the car. Check how long the battery lasts and whether you can swap it. A robot vacuum cleans on its own. Some also mop, and with a self-emptying station you rarely have to touch the dust.

Then think about your home. If you have pets, look for a model made for pet hair. If anyone has allergies, a HEPA filter helps trap fine dust. Bagless models mean you never need to buy bags, and a wet and dry vacuum can also pick up spills and coarse debris. Suction that adjusts itself to the dirt makes cleaning easier, and a quieter machine is kinder to the household.
