What to look for in fishing

Start with what you fish for. Predators such as pike, perch and zander are usually caught on lures, whether hard plugs, spinners or soft rubber shads. Choose a floating lure to work just below the surface, or a sinking one to reach deeper water, and consider a rattle to draw fish in. Soft lures need a jig head, and tungsten gives you the same weight in a smaller head than lead. A stinger with a treble hook can help with hooksets.

Coarse and carp anglers fishing a feeder or method need different kit, and sea fishing calls for tackle that copes with saltwater. Nylon monofilament line is a versatile, forgiving choice. If you travel to your swim, a telescopic rod and a padded rod bag make carrying everything easier.
