Developed by Boeing and originally McDonnell Douglas, the Boeing AH-64 Apache Longbow variant introduced significant upgrades over earlier models, including the AN/APG-78 Longbow radar system mounted above the rotor, advanced fire-control computers, and the ability to engage multiple targets simultaneously. These enhancements made it a dominant platform for modern combined-arms warfare. In March 2003, Charlie Company deployed as part of the opening phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Operating alongside the 1st Cavalry Division's ground forces, AH-64D Apaches were tasked with deep attack missions, reconnaissance-in-force operations, and destruction of Iraqi armored formations, air defenses, and command-and-control nodes. One of the most notable early missions involved large-scale helicopter raids toward Iraqi Republican Guard positions, intended to disrupt enemy defensive preparations ahead of the main coalition ground advance. During these early combat operations, Apache units encountered intense resistance, including coordinated small-arms fire and surface-to-air missile threats, highlighting both the strengths and vulnerabilities of attack helicopters in heavily defended airspace. Despite the challenges, the AH-64D demonstrated its effectiveness in precision engagement, battlefield coordination, and psychological impact on opposing forces. The experience helped refine tactics for attack aviation in urban and semi-urban environments throughout the Iraq campaign. The Apache Longbow has seen extensive service beyond Iraq, including operations in the Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan, and numerous peacekeeping and counterinsurgency missions worldwide.
