The aircraft known as "Tarheel Hal," flown by Lieutenant "Ike" David of the 366th Fighter Squadron, 358th Fighter Group, was active during the final stages of the European air war in May 1945. Operating under the Ninth Air Force, units like the 358th FG provided critical tactical air support for advancing Allied ground forces across Germany and occupied territories. By this stage of the war, the P-47 Thunderbolt had transitioned heavily into the fighter-bomber role, striking enemy supply lines, transport networks, and defensive positions while still engaging in air-to-air combat when required. The 358th Fighter Group and its P-47D aircraft participated in the broader Allied air campaign over Western Europe during the final push into Germany. This included operations supporting the liberation of occupied regions following the D-Day landings, as well as sustained interdiction missions during the advance toward the heart of the Third Reich. The P-47 proved especially effective in these missions due to its ability to operate at low and medium altitudes with heavy ordnance loads, making it a key contributor to the collapse of German logistical and battlefield resistance in 1945. By May 1945, aircraft like "Tarheel Hal" represented the culmination of the Thunderbolt's wartime evolution. From high-altitude escort duties earlier in the war to dominant close air support in its final months, the P-47D became one of the most versatile fighters of the conflict.
